Airline Crash Training at LAX
The Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — City firefighters conducted airline crash training early
Wednesday at Los Angeles International Airport, creating a smoke column
visible about 30 miles away, a spokesman said.

The annual federally mandated training began at 5 a.m.

Firefighters set two fires inside a wide body jet, using about 3,000 gallons
of jet fuel, and conducted rescue and suppression operations. The training
was not part of Homeland Security requirements.

It took place at a $3.7 million facility in the southwest corner of the
5.6-mile airport. The closest runway was not used during the exercise.

Meanwhile, other emergency crews practiced responding to various disaster
scenarios in the Southland this morning. About 9 a.m., two other unrelated
drills were in progress in El Monte and Pasadena.

The drill in El Monte was an anti-terrorism drill and the drill in Pasadena
involved various public and emergency agencies responding to a MTA emergency
drill.
