Security Tightened At Bakersfield Airport
Cars Subject To Random Searches
KERO-TV, CA
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Raising the national terror alert to orange, which
the government did Friday, has brought increased security to the Bakersfield
airport. Starting Wednesday, airport security will be making random searches
of cars, especially big cars.
They will be looking for explosives, so the searches will target large
vehicles, like sport utility vehicles. Anyone parking near the terminal or
in the hourly lots will be subject to random searches.
In addition, the presence of sheriff's deputies at Meadows Field is going to
increase. Currently, there is only one deputy permanently assigned to the
airport. How many more will be added to that patrol is unknown.
Officials at Meadows Field and the Transportation Safety Administration met
Tuesday to implement the new security measures.
Airport identification badges also will be checked more carefully for those
people with access to the runway.
Airport officials said the changes mean it's more important than ever to
arrive at least 90 minutes before your flight is scheduled to depart.
