Passenger drop noted at airport
The Associated Press
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - The international airport here has lost a greater
percentage of passengers last year than any major metropolitan airport in
Texas, despite a growing tourist industry.
Because of a 6.5 percent drop in passengers in 2002, 55,855 fewer people
flew into or out of Corpus Christi International Airport compared with to
the year before.
"To be honest, we're lucky," Airport Director Dave Hamrick told the Corpus
Christi Caller-Times in Monday's editions. "Communities across the country
are losing service."
The airport only lost three flights a week, officials said.
Tens of millions of dollars have been spent on a new terminal. Builders
spent several tens of millions of dollars more in new construction last year
compared with to 2001, which officials say indicates healthy growth.
Municipal officials hope the airport is making a comeback with its new $36
million dollar Hayden W. Head terminal, and with runway improvements that
would allow jet service.
