Blue iced runway to be constructed on Antarctica
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation

The Australian Antarctic Division has found a suitable site for the
construction of a blue iced runway on the frozen continent.

The site is 60 kilometres from Casey Station.

Air transport project manager Charlton Clark says preliminary grading of the
five-kilometre strip has been completed and core samples have been taken to
ensure the ice is structurally sound.

"We wanted to make sure we had the right site, so they were looking for
things like signs of surface melt, signs of crevassing in the area," he
said.

"And they found a site that has neither of those, that's flat and it meets
all the specifications put down by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority for a
runway."
