Locals block Paris airport terminal in night flights protest
Agence France Presse
PARIS, (AFP) - Hundreds of local residents blocked traffic around
Paris's Charles de Gaulle airport for about 90 minutes late Friday in
protest against night flights disturbing their peace.
About 200 private cars converged on the airport's Terminal 2, blocking
roads around the area.
Hundreds marched in procession, chanting "No to night flights."
"What upsets us most is what happens between 11 o'clock at night and
five in the morning," said the chairman of a local action group.
Demonstrators particularly targeted the parcel delivery service Federal
Express (FedEx), which claims to be responsible for 13 percent of local
night flights.
"FedEx is the symbol of night flights at Charles de Gaulle," the
chairman said.
The action group wants freight traffic to be diverted from Charles de
Gaulle to Vatry, an airport, about 140 kilometers (90 miles) east of
Paris, which handles only freight.
Air port officials said that "two or three flights" were delayed because
of the protest.
