New airport impressive'
BY GREG AGNEW

It's not quite finished yet, but the new terminal building at the
Greater Moncton International Airport is looking very impressive.

The $25-million building was opened up to members of the media for tours
yesterday, in advance of the official opening next Saturday, Oct. 12, by
Queen Elizabeth II. The airport building will go into service on Oct.
19.

Located on the northwest side of the airfield, the new building is
85,000 square feet, two and a half times larger than the current airport
terminal building. It includes 22 check-in counters, passenger lounges,
retail shopping, food and beverage outlets and an international
processing facility. Premium underground parking is a new feature of the
airport and part of the 500 parking spaces offered.

The design and décor of the airport building includes concrete and stone
with white birch wood detailing, with colours and swirling designs to
represent the Moncton region's ties with the Petitcodiac River, the
Atlantic Ocean and the forests of New Brunswick.

Perhaps the most striking feature of the new building is the
floor-to-ceiling windows which provide a panoramic view of the runways.

The new terminal can handle 750,000 passengers per year, compared to the
old terminal's capacity of 415,000 per year. The international arrivals
area can process up to 250 passengers at a single time, the load
normally carried by a B757 aircraft.

The departure lounge at the new Greater Moncton International Airport
terminal, where passengers wait after passing through security, will
feature a café with food service and a lounge. Approximately half the
lounge area is shown in the photo. The area to the upper right is the
observation area where the public can go to watch the planes take off.
