Runway Reconstruction Complete
KOLR-TV, MO

The first planes rolled down the newly reconstructed primary runway at
Springfield-Branson Regional Airport Thursday morning. The north-south
runway rebuilding tops off a two year, $35 million enhancement project.

The rest of the project involved extending the airport's secondary
runway to 8,000 feet and adding taxiways and instrument landing systems.

"Airports are generally considered an economic generator to a community,
and here in Springfield, to all of Southwest Missouri," said Aviation
Director Rob Hancik. "As long as we keep an updated, modern facility
that's safe with all the latest technology, we're going to keep pace
with the demands of air transportation, both in passengers and air cargo
out of Springfield."

The primary runway reconstruction began in March, 2002, and was finished
with a flight-check this week.
