SFO gets $30 million for security, to hush jets
By Justin Jouvenal
The San Mateo (CA) County Times
For homeowners in Daly City, the rumble of jets flying into San
Francisco International Airport could soon get much quieter, and SFO's
first responders will be better equipped to respond to an aircraft
emergency.
The federal government awarded SFO $29.7 million in grants Wednesday to
insulate about 270 homes against jet noise in Daly City and to boost
airport safety.
About $3 million will be used for insulation. The remaining $26.7
million is earmarked for a range of projects, including buying aircraft
rescue and firefighting vehicles, security equipment, refurbishing
runway lighting, a seismic stabilization study and other security
expenses.
"Airport noise is an annoyance for many who live and work on the
Peninsula, and for some it is truly aggravating," said Congressman Tom
Lantos, D-San Mateo. "These federal dollars are critical to improving
the quality of life for those impacted by airport noise."
SFO has already spent $24.2 million in funds insulating about 1,600
homes in Daly City. Since 1983, SFO and the federal government have paid
to insulate more than 12,000 County homes, schools and churches
surrounding the airport.
The money goes for such things as replacing standard windows with
noise-dampening windows, insulating attics and replacing regular doors
with heavier models.
Mike McCarron, an SFO spokesman, said it is one of the largest federal
grants to SFO in recent memory. In 2001, the U.S. Department of
Transportation awarded $15.25 million for upgrading safety areas,
installing taxiway lights and repairing runway lighting at the airport.
"We've been waiting for awhile to get some of these things," he said.
