Lockheed Martin Completes Checkpoint Assessments
Airport Security Report

After three months of visiting security checkpoints at 429 U.S.
airports, Lockheed Martin assessment teams have completed site surveys
one week ahead of schedule and redesigns of more than 150 checkpoints
have begun, the company announced. More than 130 checkpoints are under
construction, but only five are substantially completed, including
Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI), the nation's pilot
airport for checkpoint upgrades. That leaves little more than six weeks
to complete the redesigns before the Transportation Security
Administration (TSA) must meet the Nov. 19, 2002, statutory deadline to
deploy screening personnel. The majority of the work consists of
enlarging and redesigning checkpoints, but metal detectors, hand wands
and x-ray machines are also being upgraded or replaced. KPMG Consulting,
a systems integration firm, and Parsons Corp., an aviation construction
company, are assisting Lockheed.
