More Airports to Get New Checkpoints
WASHINGTON (AP) - Pressing for improved airline security, the Bush
administration said Friday it will begin overhauling more than 130
airports next month.
The work marks the first step toward replacing private employees with
federal screeners at the airports.
At some airports, passenger checkpoints will be redesigned. At others,
plans will be developed for installing equipment to inspect checked
baggage for explosives.
Currently, federal employees are screening passengers at
Baltimore-Washington; Louisville, Ky., and Mobile, Ala.
The Transportation Security Administration also plans to hire security
screeners at eight more airports next week - Charlotte, N.C.;
Cincinnati; Cleveland; Minneapolis; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Raleigh,
N.C., and Tampa, Fla.
The airports where the checkpoints are being redesigned are Juneau,
Nome, Unalaska-Dutch Harbor, Wiley Post/Will Rogers and Wrangell,
Alaska; Birmingham and Northwest Alabama; Little Rock, Ark.;
Laughlin-Bullhead City Phoenix and Tucson, Ariz.;
Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena, Orange County, Long Beach, Ontario, Redding,
Sacramento and San Diego, Calif.; Colorado Springs, Colo.; Hartford,
Conn.; Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, Jacksonville, Miami,
Sarasota-Bradenton, Southwest Florida, St. Petersburg-Clearwater and
West Palm Beach, Fla.; Bush Field, Ga.; Guam; Honolulu, Kahului and
Kona, Hawaii; Des Moines, Iowa; Friedman, Idaho; Chicago Midway, Peoria,
and Rock Island, Ill.; Fort. Wayne and Indianapolis, Ind.; Wichita, Kan.
Also, New Orleans and Shreveport, La.; Boston; Salisbury-Wicomico
County, Md.; Portland, Maine; Cherry Capital, Detroit and Gogebic
County, Mich.; Forney Army Airfield, Kansas City and St. Louis, Mo.;
Jackson, Miss.; Billings and Glacier Park, Mont.; Hickory and
Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; Minot, N.D.; Eppley Airfield, Kearney and Lincoln,
Neb.; Pease, N.H.; Newark and Trenton-Mercer, N.J.; Albuquerque and
Roswell, N.M.; Las Vegas and Reno-Tahoe, Nev.
Also, New York Kennedy, Rochester and Syracuse, N.Y.; Cleveland and
Cincinnati; Tulsa and Will Rogers, Okla.: Portland, Ore.; Harrisburg,
Pittsburgh and Venango, Pa.; T.F. Green, R.I.; Luis Munoz, P.R.; Joe
Foss Field, S.D.; Mckellar-Sipes and Memphis, Tenn.; Austin-Bergstrom,
Corpus Christi, Dallas Love, El Paso, Houston, Gregg County, Midland,
San Antonio, and Hobby, Texas; Salt Lake City and Vernal-Uintah County,
Utah; Charlottesville-Abermarle, Reagan National, Washington Dulles and
Roanoke, Va.; Pangborn, Wash.; Dane County and General Mitchell, Wis.
The airports where the government is developing plans for installing
explosive detection equipment are:
Anchorage, Bethel, Deadhorse, Dillingham, Gustavus, King Salmon, Kodiak,
Kotzebue, Merle K. (Mudhole) Smith, Sitka, and Yakutat, Alaska; Mobile,
Ala.; Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Jose, Calif.; Denver; Orlando
and Tampa, Fla.; Atlanta; Chicago O'Hare; Louisville, Ky.;
Baltimore-Washington; Minneapolis-St. Paul; Charlotte, N.C.; New York
LaGuardia; Port Columbus, Ohio; Philadelphia; Dallas-Fort Worth;
Seattle-Tacoma and Spokane, Wash.
