Port Authority announces record contract awards
The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) Nearly 200 construction contracts worth more than $1
billion are expected to be awarded this year by the Port Authority of
New York and New Jersey, the agency said Thursday.

The amount of the contracts awarded was the most in the bistate agency's
history, officials announced during a board meeting in lower Manhattan.

''This agency is increasing its productive output, getting contracts
awarded and shovels in the ground,'' said Jack Singara, chairman of the
Port Authority, which runs area bridges, tunnels, mass transit hubs and
ports and owns the World Trade Center site.

In a related matter, the agency also approved a $46.5 million lease
agreement with JetBlue that will allow the airline to expand its
operations at John F. Kennedy International Airport. The lease gives
JetBlue access to all 13 gates at the airport's Terminal 6 through 2006.

JetBlue, which began service out of JFK in February 2000, is now the
airport's largest domestic airline, carrying more than 400,000
passengers a month, the agency said.

''We look forward to working with JetBlue to help stimulate the recovery
of the aviation industry,'' which was hurt by the Sept. 11 hijackings,
Singara said.

So far, the Port Authority has doled out $580 million to contractors
working on a plethora of transportation projects, the agency said. They
include $300 million for the restoration of PATH commuter train service
between New Jersey and lower Manhattan and $46.1 million for the repairs
to the Lincoln Tunnel bus ramps and bridges.

Contracts that have been or will be completed in 2002 include those for
a light-rail system at JFK; the Intelligent Transportation System at the
George Washington Bridge so that travelers can get real-time traffic
updates by telephone; a new 3,600-space parking garage at Newark
International Airport, in New Jersey; and repairs to the toll plazas at
the Lincoln Tunnel.
