Hamilton airport to expand; Vancouver's aviation authority invests $22
million
Canada - The Toronto Star
HAMILTON, Vancouver's airport authority will invest $22 million to help
boost passenger capacity tenfold at the Hamilton airport, the main
eastern hub for Calgary-based WestJet Airlines Ltd.
The Vancouver International Airport Authority will have a majority stake
in TradePort International Corp., which owns the rights to the airport,
said TradePort spokesperson Ken Mitchell yesterday.
The Vancouver airport agency already owns a stake in TradePort and has
run the Hamilton airport since 1996. TradePort's other shareholders are
Tony Battaglia and Laborers' International Union of North America,
Mitchell said.
WestJet, a discounter and Canada's second-biggest carrier, began flying
to Hamilton in March, 2000. The number of passengers using the Hamilton
airport is forecast to rise to 5 million in 2007 from 553,000 last year,
Mitchell said.
WestJet plans to add flights to cities in central and eastern Canada
from Hamilton, said company spokesperson Siobhan Vinish. Earlier this
year, the airline began flying to Toronto.
Most of the investment in TradePort will be used to help design and
build a new terminal building, Mitchell said. The airport plans to begin
construction early next year on a 500,000 square foot terminal, about 10
times the size of the existing building, he said.
TradePort has spent about $13 million this year to expand ticket and
check-in areas, baggage claim and parking, Mitchell said. He said
Hamilton expects to attract more carriers, including U.S. airlines
seeking to add routes between the two countries.
Shares of WestJet fell 35 cents to close at $19.75 on the Toronto Stock
Exchange yesterday.
