Malaysian Airport Unveils Incentives
The Wall Street Journal

New airlines flying into Malaysia's main airport won't have to pay
landing or parking charges for five years, Transport Minister Ling Liong
Sik said Tuesday. The waiver, which is retroactive to May 3, also
applies to airlines that increase the frequency of their existing
flights to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport , the official said.
The government hopes the incentives will lure more carriers to the
airport , which it is trying to develop into an Asian regional hub. The
ultramodern $667.4 million airport opened in 1998, one of several huge
infrastructure projects Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad says will help
make Malaysia a fully developed country by 2020. The government built a
fast train service to the airport, located about 75 kilometers (45
miles) outside Kuala Lumpur, and offered other incentives to airlines.
But so far it has failed to rival major regional ports in the region
such as Singapore and Bangkok.
