Airport authority holds noise test from Narita's 2nd runway
Kyodo News

NARITA, Japan, (Kyodo) - The airport authority Tuesday conducted a test
to determine the amount of noise generated from the second runway at
Narita airport, scheduled to open April 18.

The New Tokyo International Airport Authority conducted the test at the
request of municipalities around the airport in Chiba Prefecture, just
east of Tokyo, using two jet airplanes of Japan Airlines and All Nippon
Airways.

The airplanes flew their actual routes above the airport and also
between the Tonegawa River and Kujukurihama in the prefecture, while the
authority measured the noise levels at 16 locations near the runway and
immediately below the flight route.

The noise around a house of a farmer on the land within the airport
construction site, some 400 meters south of the new runway, is expected
to reach 100 decibels after the runway begins operations later this
month. The noise level is equivalent to the sound of a running train
heard from under a railroad overpass.

The farmer, with his family, opposes the construction of the unfinished
airport and still lives on the site, refusing to sell his land.

The second runway is expected to mainly accommodate medium-size
passenger jets, including Boeing 767s and Airbus A300s, for domestic
flights and short-haul overseas flights linking Narita and Asian
countries.
