New Zealand's Auckland International Airport To Start Major Runway
Repairs
WELLINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Auckland International Airport Ltd., the
operator of New Zealand's busiest visitor gateway, said its main runway
will be closed for construction work from Saturday until May 7.
The company said Tuesday it is replacing a large part of the middle
section of the runway - the first major repair work to that area since
the airport opened in 1965 - as part of a rebuilding program that began
in 1998.
During the construction period, aircraft will use the recently completed
standby runway. That will cause some delays in peak periods but Managing
Director John Goulter said time lost will be "minimal."
The rebuilt runway and associated taxiways will have a lifespan of about
40 years, the company said.
