Canada speeds up plans for explosive detectors at airports
Agence France Presse
OTTAWA, (AFP) - Canada said Tuesday it plans to accelerate the
installation of explosive detectors at Canadian airports as part of
enhanced security measures introduced after the September 11 airborne
attacks on US cities.
Canadian Transport Minister David Collenette said the systems were
originally to be up and running by 2003.
"For security reasons, specific information will not be announced on the
deployment of this equipment," a Transport Canada statement said.
The systems will complement new security measures implemented following
the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, including
increased police presence at airports, more passenger screenings and
hand searches of baggage.
Last week, Collenette also ordered pilots to lock cockpit doors for the
full duration of domestic and international flights.
