The Indian Civil Aviation Minister Shri Sharad Yadav has asked Indian
Airlines to consider leasing several 50-seat aircraft in order to offer
increased services to smaller towns and tourist destinations such as Kullu.
The minister has stated that the necessary infrastructure and communications
facilities will be installed at Kullu in order to ready Kangra Airport
accept more reliable flights.
Swissair Group has signed a marketing agreement to become the official
airline of the International Olympic Committee. A Swissair Airbus aircraft
sporting the IOC's five-ring logo will start flying in July. Details of the
agreement were not disclosed.
The board of directors of Continental Airlines appointed Larry Kellner
president of the company at a meeting on 15 May. Kellner was also elected to
the company's board at an annual meeting of stockholders held on 15 May. CD
McLean has been appointed vice president and chief operating officer, while
Jeff Smisek was elected executive vice president-corporate.
Emirates, a Dubai-based carrier, has agreed to lease two new Boeing 777-300
aircraft from Singapore Aircraft Leasing Enterprise for ten years. The
aircraft will be delivered in July and September 2002 and the agreement
includes an option for two more, which could be delivered in 2003 according
to AsiaPulse.
The European Regions Airline Association has appointed John Barrass as its
new Air Safety Manager. Barrass replaces Ian Wigmore, who will continue work
for ERA on a part-time basis.
The Russian government is continuing to demand that two men who hijacked a
Vnukovo Airlines Tu-154 aircraft carrying 162 passengers and 12 crew to
Saudi Arabia be extradited to Russia. The Russian Foreign Minister Igor
Ivanov has stated that Russia has not yet received an official reply from
the Saudi government according to Itar-Tass.
Ascent Technology Inc has introduced SmartAirport Operations Center, a new
software solution for airports and airlines. The SmartAirport Operations
Center package comprises four products - SmartAirport Schedule Builder,
SmartAirport Capacity Analyzer, SmartAirport Operations Manager and
SmartAirport Personnel Allocator.
Atlantic Southeast Airlines, a Delta Connection carrier and wholly owned
subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, has launched its own web site at
http://www.flyasa.com. The carrier will offer discounts of up to 10% on
tickets purchased through the web site for most leisure fares requiring 21-,
14- or seven-day advance purchase. SkyMiles members will also receives 1,000
bonus SkyMiles for each round-trip of 500 miles each way.
