Sacramento International Gets Clean-Air Funds
Press Release
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) recently announced that
Sacramento International (SMF) will be one of 10 airports to receive funding
for clean-air projects. The other nine airports are Baltimore-Washington
International; Baton Rouge, La., Metropolitan; Chicago O’Hare International;
Dallas/Fort Worth International; Denver International; Hartsfield Atlanta
International; New York’s John F. Kennedy International; New York LaGuardia
and San Francisco International.
The FAA will cover up to $2 million for the Inherently Low-Emission
Airport
Vehicle (ILEAV) program designed to substantially reduce ozone and carbon
monoxide levels at Sacramento International. International and
participating airline tenants will at least match those funds for the
program.
Some components of the program at International will include the
purchase and use of additional compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles, a CNG
refueling station and another solar photovoltaic array that creates
emission-free electricity directly from the sun.
Sacramento International already houses a solar photovoltaic array that
will be studied by delegates from Japan while visiting International in
July.
“Based on International’s past record of using environmentally friendly
technology, we have been chosen as one of 10 airports nationwide to compete
for additional funds to continue in our mission to develop the County
Airport System consistent with community values,” said G. Hardy Acree,
Director of Airports for the Sacramento County Airport System.
Sacramento County Executive Terry Schutten added, “We’re excited to be
part
of a joint venture aimed at promoting a healthier environment. Sacramento
County’s Airport System is already a leader in this effort, and these
dollars will help us continue to do our part to reduce air pollution in our
region.”
First District Supervisor Roger Dickinson affirmed, “This award
underscores
the critical role that the County Airport System can play in reducing air
pollution in our region. Sacramento County takes its role as a clean air
leader very seriously, and is working hard to minimize air quality impacts
and improve the quality of life throughout our region.”
“I am pleased that Sacramento International Airport has been chosen to
receive the ILEAV grant,” said Congressman Doug Ose (R-Sacramento), who made
a funding request on behalf of SMF to Congress this year on this project.
“This grant will improve air quality in the Sacramento region and make SMF a
model airport for demonstrating clean fuel technology.”
The FAA’s ILEAV program represents a combined $46 million nationwide
investment by the government, airports and industry in their goal to reduce
air pollution at airports.
The Sacramento County Airport System is responsible for planning,
developing, operating and maintaining Sacramento County’s airports, which
include Sacramento International Airport, Executive Airport, Mather Airport
and Franklin Field.
