Sydney Airport Corp wants price controls scrapped
Australian Associated Press
The soon-to-be-privatised Sydney Airports Corporation Ltd (SACL) has called
for airports to be allowed to freely set their own prices for aviation
services.
In its submission to a Productivity Commission inquiry into airport price
regulation, SACL argues that an airport-specific economic regulatory regime
could deter investment and lead to inefficiencies, especially at constrained
airports such as Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport.
SACL said the economic deregulation of Australia's airports will deliver the
greatest net benefits to consumers.
Currently, Aviation service charges must be approved by the Australian
Competition and Consumer Commission.
The Federal Government last Thursday announced it would sell Sydney's
Kingsford Smith Airport this year, with three other Sydney basin airports to
be offloaded next year.
