Swedish authority makes recommendations for airport development
M2 Communications

Bromma airport should be developed and a fourth runway be built at
Stockholm's Arlanda airport, according to the Swedish aviation
administration.

After the Prime Minister Goran Persson recently said that he was opposed to
a new airport being developed at Sodertorn, the aviation administration said
that it recommends both a fourth runway at Arlanda and development of
Bromma.

According to the aviation administration, air traffic is growing faster than
expected and the government will need a clear political will and guidelines
to keep the Stockholm region at the same pace. Developing Bromma would
however be against current agreements, as the airport is due to be closed at
the end of 2011 and handed over to the city of Stockholm.

Despite broad support for Sodertorn from municipalities, the city of
Stockholm and the county council, the government wants to close the option
by proposing to set the area aside for residential development, Ulf
Adelsohn, the county governor for Stockholm, has said.

The third runway at Arlanda will be taken into use at the start of 2002,
while a fourth runway could only be available for use in 2013 at the
earliest.
