Meeting set on Livermore airport issue
By Sam Richards
THE CONTRA COSTA TIMES

LIVERMORE, CALIF. -- Concerned about proposed airport expansion -- and
whether commercial passenger flights would soon follow -- airport officials
will hold a special public meeting this month specifically to provide
information and allow discussion of those issues.

The meeting will give residents, pilots and others a chance to discuss
commercial flights. About 200 residents attended that workshop, and many
came away angry that commercial service was not discussed that day.

The meeting will be from 6 to 9 p.m. June 27 at Beeb's, 915 Club House
Drive, near Livermore Municipal Airport.

Airport officials have proposed lengthening one of the runways by about
1,300 feet and adding lights to it. They insist the improvements are
intended to help current corporate and private airport users.

Such master plan improvements are not necessarily a precursor to commercial
scheduled flights coming to Livermore, said Mike Miller, Livermore's public
services director.

"Right now, we haven't had a lot of support for that, either from residents
or the airport community," Miller said.

Some Livermore and Pleasanton residents have been more wary. They reason
that if the airport is physically improved so it can handle commercial
traffic, such traffic is more likely to come at some point.

Some Livermore residents living near the airport say they don't object to
improving the airport for existing users. Rick Camacho said he and other
neighbors are trying to stay away from any confrontations with the airport.

"We want to work with them ... but the direction for this process has to
come from the City Council and not the (airport's) consultant" overseeing
the master plan, Camacho said.

Pleasanton residents, especially the northeast side nearest the airport,
have questions, too. A prime concern is of planes coming ever closer to
homes and schools, notably Mohr Elementary.

Susan Horne of Pleasanton said residents from all over town have concerns
about airport expansion and prospective commercial flights. Additional
flights of any kind increase concerns about safety and noise, whether
flights are commercial or not, she said.

"People are afraid the airport will turn into a mini-San Jose (airport),
thereby affecting our quality of life," she said.

The city of Pleasanton is doing a noise and altitude study of airport
expansion plans. Horne is a member of the ad-hoc committee working on that
study.

On July 10, the City Council is scheduled to discuss a proposal to bring
scheduled passenger air service to Livermore. Camacho said he and some of
his neighbors plan to bring it up at Monday's council meeting, too.
