U.S. FIRM WINS 20-YEAR CONCESSION TO RUN FOUR HONDURAN AIRPORTS
Tegucigalpa, Mar 10, 2000 (EFE) -- U.S.-based Inter Airport has won a
20-year concession to run four Honduran airports, in bidding which also
included competition from Spain's AENA.
Three foreign firms including Aeropuertos Espanoles and Navegacion Aerea
(AENA), were competing for the concession, which was decided Thursday night
at a Tegucigalpa hotel following 12 hours of meetings.
Honduran Finance Minister Gabriela Nunez, said that Inter Airport won the
concession because it made the best offer to the Honduran government, which
will receive 39 percent of the revenues, as compared with 25.9 percent
offered by the Spanish firm.
The four facilities to be managed by the U.S. firm are the Toncontin airport
in Tegucigalpa, the Jose Ramon Villeda Morales airport in San Pedro Sula,
the Goloson airport in La Ceiba and the Juan Manuel Galvez airport on the
island of Roatan, in the country's central, northern and Caribbean regions.
Nunez said that the next step is the approval of the firm's contract by the
Honduran Congress.
The bill will be sent to Congress as soon as possible, and it is expected
that the concession for running the airports will be made official by the
end of this year, Nunez added. The concession will be for 20 years, and is
extendable.
The agreement with the winning firm calls for existing airport taxes to
remain in place for the next three years and for the terminals to be
renovated.
