Scottsdale to inaugurate airport Customs service
By The Arizona Republic
In September: The Scottsdale City Council approves $111,500 to build an
office at the Scottsdale Airport and pay the salary of a full-time U.S.
Customs inspector.
Now: After months of planning, the airport will become the Valley's only
airport beside Sky Harbor International to provide Customs service.
Airplanes flying from Mexico and Canada to Scottsdale will not have to
detour about 110 miles to Tucson or about 160 miles to Nogales or Yuma to be
inspected.
"They can just fly directly in and they can do their customs business in
Scottsdale," said Steve Hogan, city transportation general manager.
Officials plan an inauguration on Tuesday at the airport, 15000 N. Airport
Drive. City Councilman Richard Thomas and city airport Commissioner John
Knudsen are scheduled to fly in from Puerto Penasco, Mexico, to "make a
little bit of a spectacle of the first arrival," said Warren Eales,
supervisory Customs inspector.
To help recoup the cost of the Customs office, the airport will charge user
fees ranging from $45 per inspection for single-engine airplanes to $350 for
heavy corporate jets.
Airport officials expect the proposed fees to raise $70,000 in the first
year and about $130,000 in the second. Because airport officials expect to
come up $45,000 short in the first year, they have asked the city to fund
the start-up.
Meanwhile, Mesa officials are also trying to launch Customs service at
Gateway Airport, Eales said.
