Ogden Battles for Its Air Space
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
OGDEN -- To ease traffic congestion, the Salt Lake International Airport
is trying to take a five-mile track of air space from Ogden Hinckley
Airport.
But Ogden is fighting back.
In a letter to the Federal Aviation Administration, Ogden Mayor Glenn
Mecham said the proposal would pinch the growth of Ogden's airport, which is
expected to take on more of its own traffic with the development of a
military depot into an industrial park.
Ogden officials also say Salt Lake's request could undermine their
airport's status as the alternate airport for the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
Salt Lake airport officials want to take control of airspace east of the
Ogden airport to make room for more airline takeoffs and landings.
Pam Sheeler, an air traffic controller for the Salt Lake International
Airport, said the tower has received many complaints about tight quarters
from commercial pilots.
"We've seen a significant increase in air traffic," Sheeler said.
An FAA study of the proposal is scheduled to be completed Dec. 7.
Ogden Hinckley Airport Manager Jerry Taylor said Salt Lake does not need
the extra airspace and is asking for it only for the sake of convenience.
"We just don't think it's justified," Taylor said.
Salt Lake airport officials say federal aviation standards recommend
that airspace at airports of their size should encompass a 30-mile radius at
12,500 feet.
In Salt Lake, jets have only a 25-mile radius at 10,000 feet.
Taylor said if Salt Lake claims the five-mile section, pilots landing in
Ogden will be required to get clearance from Salt Lake and make a
technically correct landing using aviation instruments.
Ogden pilots are only required to conduct visual landings.
