Airport sees increase in passengers
BY PATRICK CROWLEY

HEBRON — The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport was
the 23rd-busiest airport in the nation during the first six months of the
year, according to an airline industry report.

The airport's passenger traffic was 10,590,614 between January and
June, a 4.4 percent increase over the same period last year, according to
the aviation trade group Airport Council International (ACI).

The nation's busiest airport is Atlanta, which had passenger traffic
of 38.7 million during the first half of this year.

The Greater Cincinnati airport finished just behind Char lotte,
N.C., which had 10.8 million passengers, and just ahead of Salt Lake City,
which had 9.8 million passengers.

Delta Air Lines operates hubs at the Cincinnati, Atlanta and Salt
Lake City airports. U.S. Airways has a hub at Charlotte.

Kenton County Airport Board member Arlyn T. Eas ton said the
increase in passenger counts shows that local residents prefer flying out of
Cincinnati rather than driving to nearby cities.

Airports in Louisville and Columbus have advertised in the
Cincinnati market, trying to attract passengers and pointing out the high
fares travelers often pay to fly out of Cincinnati.

“This shows that despite those efforts, more people are choosing to
use our airport,” Mr. Easton said during a recent airport board meeting.

But the airport is also trying to increase competition by attracting
more flights from airlines other than Delta and Comair, the airport's
dominant carriers.

Mr. Easton said members of the airport board's air service committee
plan to meet next year with representatives of Northwest, United and U.S.
Airways about increasing the flights at the airport.

Of the airport's 576 daily departures during October, Northwest,
United and U.S. Airways accounted for just 35 of those flights.
