Airport hopes to attract new carrier and more travelers
MSNBC
SIOUX CITY, Iowa, Oct. 28th. Airport officials say they’re confident Des
Moines based Access Air will be servicing Sioux-Gateway sometime this
spring, and they’ll need some other improvements to attract more travelers.
Access Air Officials say they need a fifth jet in their fleet, plus
$100,000 to reach a $1.7 million goal for company expansion (Access Air has
been asking area communities to loan them the $100,000).
Sioux-Gateway Director Mike Klein says a new airline will add
competition in the airport, to hopefully keep airfares reasonable and give
passengers more choice of flights.
Increasing competition isn’t the only thing Sioux-Gateway Officials hope
to change. In a meeting with city council members Thursday, airport board
members talked about Sioux-Gateway’s future.
Klein says the number of passengers flying from Sioux-Gateway has
leveled-off in the last few years, and projections show growth will be slow
unless changes are made to the airport’s facilities. Airport managers think
renovations to the terminal, making it more “passenger friendly”, will help
attract travelers.
This year, the airport received $125,000 from the city, and next year
they’ll get $50,000 to help cover the cost of such improvements. By 2001,
Sioux-Gateway hopes they will not need any city money to improve their
facility or its operations. To operate without the help of city money, the
airport board is looking at raising landing rates for the current airlines
at Sioux-Gateway.
