Contractors given last chance at airport

A contracting firm that has allowed expansion of the Hyatt Hotel at Orlando
International Airport to fall nearly four months behind schedule was given a
last chance Wednesday to catch up.
Oderbrecht Contractors of Florida Inc., a large firm with extensive airport
experience, was within days of losing the $10.7 million contract. The
company will not be given similar breaks on two other local projects that
are also weeks behind, members of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority
warned.
The jobs are Oderbrecht's first at Orlando International.
"I will support this motion, but if these other jobs aren't brought up to
speed, don't come back to me with another motion like this," said board
member Bob Hattaway.
Oderbrecht technical director Roger Foley said the firm is committed to
keeping the new schedule. He would not comment on the causes of the delays.
The airport's senior construction director told the board that Oderbrecht's
earth-moving work on a giant taxiway for carrying jets across the airport's
entrance road is eight weeks behind. The firm's preparation of the ground
for the airport's new terminal complex -- on a tract south of the existing
building -- is between 10 and 14 weeks behind.
Authority staff had been ready to cancel Oderbrecht's contract after
repeated warnings to bring the work up to speed, said airport senior
construction director Jim Bradley. But on Monday the firm brought Bradley
and authority executive director Egerton van den Berg a detailed plan for
getting the job on track. It includes provisions for paying the authority $1
million a month if it misses its November deadline.
November is six months later than the authority originally asked for the
work to be done.
Van den Berg said the delays have cost the hotel money and business.
